Publishing a Supplement

APHA is committed to enhancing the American Journal of Public Health as the premier forum for the most current public health science. To reach our goal, we plan to publish at least 2 special supplements each year on topics of particular interest to public health practitioners and researchers. Each supplement will offer expanded space to highlight a topic more thoroughly than can be done through a regular issue of AJPH.

The first AJPH supplement, entitled Scientific Evidence and Public Policy, was published in July 2005. In April 2007, we focused on Public Health Preparedness. Most recently, we published a legacy issue in September 2008 entitled Toward Health Justice.

Funding support is required for publication of a supplement, which may be published in both print and online formats or online only. The following guidelines have been established for planning and publication:

  • The AJPH Editor–in–Chief must approve and accept the topic.
  • The AJPH Editor–in–Chief will maintain full editorial control of all content.
  • Papers will undergo editorial and/or peer review, as per established AJPH procedures, with agreed upon modifications to enhance the quality of the content.
  • A sponsor may suggest a desired publication date for the issue; however, APHA reserves the right to reschedule the issue, if necessary, based upon other commitments.
  • Funding support must be provided to APHA in advance of publication because the work involved in publishing a supplement starts well before the publication date.
  • The sponsoring organization may appoint a guest editor to work on the supplement with the Editor–in–Chief and the AJPH staff throughout the process: coordinating the submission of manuscripts, facilitating the peer review process, developing a publication schedule, working with authors in the review of proofs and copyeditor queries, and preparing a written introduction to guide readers of the supplement with regard to its context and content.
