E M Bertera and
R L Bertera
The cost-effectiveness of counseling by telephone and by clinicvisit contacts were compared in 40 hypertensive patients eachof whom received counseling and reinforcement every three weeksfor six months regarding diet, exercise, smoking, and copingwith stress. Blood pressure declined significantly in both counselinggroups (N: 10 each) but not in a control group (N: 20). Thecost per patient under control was $82 for the clinic counselingand $39 for the telephone counseling strategy, suggesting thattelephone counseling was a cost-effective technique.
