We investigated the association of social supports and stresseswith depressive symptoms in a sample of 111 predominantly low-incomemothers of young children. The prevalence of high depressivesymptoms, as measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies--DepressionScale (CES-D), was 48 per cent. Among unmarried women, everydaystressors were strongly associated with depressive symptoms, while life events were weakly related. Associations betweenthese variables were not found for married women. Comparingthe relative importance of two different types of support--thequality of primary intimate relationships, and the social network--onlythe quality of the husband-intimate relationship was associatedwith CES-D scores among married women, whereas the social networkdemonstrated a moderate, inverse association with CES-D scoresamong unemployed women.
