Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world(29 per 100,000 population in 1980). Suicides are especiallyfrequent among young adults, both male and female. Comparedto the US, the suicide rate for males ages 15 to 24 years inSri Lanka is nearly four times greater; the female rate nearly13 times greater. The most common mode of suicide is ingestionof liquid pesticides.
