To estimate the seroprevalence and investigate risk behaviorsfor HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection in intravenousdrug users in Los Angeles County, a stratified, random sampleof 790 clients, enrolled in either methadone maintenance ordetoxification programs, were studied. Thirteen study participants(1.8 per cent) were seropositive; of these, five were homosexual/bisexualmales and three were female prostitutes. Ninety-five per centof all participants reported sharing needles. Risk reductioneducation efforts must be expanded before the HIV antibody prevalencerate increases.
