This paper describes self-reported maintenance of nonsmokingat six months postpartum by women whose abstinence was verifiedbeginning before the 20th week of pregnancy and continuing throughdelivery (n = 134). The overall maintenance rate of 37 percentwas not related to sociodemographic characteristics, smokingand obstetric history, the time when quitting occurred, or aprenatal smoking cessation program. Although this rate is encouraging, more attention should be directed to sustaining prenatal abstinencefrom smoking beyond delivery.
