Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1, syphilis, and hepatitisB prevalence and associated risk factors were assessed amongmale transvestite prostitutes. Structured street-level interviewswere conducted with 53 respondents in Atlanta, Ga, from July1990 through July 1991. Test results from serum samples revealedthat 68% were seropositive for HIV-1, 81% had seromarkers forsyphilis, and 80% had seromarkers for hepatitis B. Univariatelogistic regression analysis indicated that seromarkers forsyphilis and Black race were the primary factors associatedwith HIV-1 infection. The results show that transvestite prostitutesare a heterogenous population and distinct from nontransvestiteprostitutes; specific outreach is thus needed. Targeted interventionsshould address the sexual and drug-use-related HIV risk behaviorsof transvestite prostitutes.
