The reporting sensitivities of two passive surveillance systems for vaccine adverse events.

To evaluate reporting sensitivities for vaccine adverse events, reporting rates were estimated by dividing the number of eventsreported to the Monitoring System for Adverse Events FollowingImmunization and the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting Systemin a given period by the number of doses administered or distributedduring the same period. Reporting sensitivity was calculatedas the ratio of the rates at which events were reported to eachpassive surveillance system (numerator) and occurred in controlledstudies (denominator). Reporting sensitivities were generallybetter in the public sector than in the private sector. Thesignificant underreporting of known outcomes, together withthe nonspecific nature of most adverse event reports, highlightsthe limitations of passive surveillance systems in assessingthe incidence of vaccine adverse events.
