OBJECTIVES: This research compared the validity of self-reportsof cigarette smoking for African-American, Hispanic, and Whiterespondents. Previous research has raised a question about thevalidity of self-report for African Americans. METHODS: A self-reportof cigarette smoking was obtained together with a measure ofcarbon monoxide from expired air. Convergence between self-reportedsmoking and the biochemical measure was analyzed separatelyfor three ethnic groups at 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, and 10th grade. RESULTS: Analyses indicated that the validityof self-reports of smoking was generally comparable across ethnicgroups. Sensitivity and specificity were comparable with datareported in recent meta-analyses. Though sensitivity was slightlylower for minority adolescents than for White adolescents, prevalencerates corrected for group differences in sensitivity showedsignificantly lower smoking rates for African-American and Hispanicadolescents than for White adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: The lowersmoking rates reported for African-American adolescents arereal and are not substantially a consequence of reporting artifacts.
