OBJECTIVES: Survivors of breast cancer are at high risk fordevelopment of a second breast cancer and are thus a group forwhom annual mammography screening is recommended. However, survivors'use of mammography rarely has been examined. METHODS: We surveyeda representative population sample of survivors who lived inrural communities about their mammography use after cancer.RESULTS: Of these women, 30% had not received a mammogram inthe preceding year. Predictors of mammography use included physicianrecommendation and whether the original cancer had been detectedby mammography. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians should recommend mammographyto survivors of breast cancer to ensure regular use.
