OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the relationship of state hospitaland general hospital psychiatric caseloads in a statewide systemof care. METHODS: Probabilistic population estimation was appliedto general hospital and state hospital data sets. RESULTS: Generalhospitals provide inpatient psychiatric services to more peoplethan do state hospitals, and a significant number are servedin both sectors. There were notable differences in use patternsrelated to patient gender and age. CONCLUSIONS: These resultsdemonstrate that probabilistic methodologies can significantlyenhance the value of existing databases for epidemiologicalresearch.
