Objectives. Nationally representative data were used to examineassociations of romantic attractions and relationships withsubstance use and abuse.
Methods. Data from the Add Health Study were examined. Youthsreporting same-sex and both-sex romantic attractions and relationshipswere compared with those reporting opposite-sex attractions.Survey regression and logistic regression were used to controlfor sample design effects.
Results. In the case of certain outcomes, romantic attractionaffected males differently than females. Youths with both-sexattractions were at a somewhat higher risk for substance useand abuse than were heterosexual youths; females with same-sexattractions were also at higher risk for some outcomes. Sexual-minorityyouths varied little from heterosexual youths in regard to trajectoriesof substance use and abuse.
Conclusions. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishingbetween youths with only same-sex attractions and those withboth-sex attractions. These findings also call into questionprevious findings indicating that sexual-minority youths areautomatically "at risk."
