The US Department of Health and Human Services has developedan initiative called "Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparitiesin Health," which parallels Healthy People 2010, the nation'shealth goals for the next decade. The initiative focuses onareas of health disparity that are known to affect raciallyand ethnically diverse groups of the population yet hold thepromise of improvement.
The first step to addressing such health inequities is to understandthe scope and nature of the diseases that contribute to suchdisparities. This commentary reviews the epidemiology and consequencesof type 2 diabetes, particularly as it is manifested in sociallyand culturally diverse groups, and offers recommendations foractions to address the disparities resulting from diabetes.
