Objectives. This study examined the persistence and comorbidityof womens physical and mental health conditions afterpregnancy and the association of these conditions with childoutcomes.
Methods. A national cohort of women who recently gave birthwere surveyed in 1988 and again in 1991. We examined longitudinaldata on maternal poor physical health, depressive symptoms, and smoking, and maternal report of child outcomes (at age 3years).
Results. Womens poor physical health and smoking hadstrong, graded associations with childrens physical healthand behavior problems, whereas womens depressive symptomswere associated with childrens delayed language and behaviorproblems.
Conclusions. Substantial persistence and comorbidity of womenshealth conditions exist after pregnancy with adverse effectson early child outcomes. Child health professionals should supportservices and policies that promote womens health outsidethe context of pregnancy.
