The author examines available evidence on the effects of exposureto joblessness on emotional well-being according to race andsex. The impact of racism on general health outcomes also isconsidered, particularly racism in the specific form of wagediscrimination.
Perceptions of racism and measured exposures to racism may bedistinct triggers for adverse health outcomes. Whether the effectsof racism are best evaluated on the basis of self-classificationor social classification of racial identity is unclear.
Some research sorts between the effects of race and socioeconomicstatus on health. The development of a new longitudinal databasewill facilitate more accurate identification of connectionsbetween racism and negative health effects.
