Certain groups in the United States remain at high risk andsuffer disproportionately from tobacco-related illness and deathdespite progress made in reducing tobacco use. To address gapsin research on tobacco-related disparities and develop a comprehensiveagenda aimed at reducing such disparities, representatives fromfunding agencies, community-based organizations, and academicinstitutions convened at the National Conference on Tobaccoand Health Disparities in 2002. Conference participants reviewedthe current research, identified existing gaps, and prioritizedscientific recommendations. Panel discussions were organizedto address research areas affecting underserved and understudiedpopulations. We report major research recommendations made bythe conference participants in several scientific domains. Theserecommendations will ultimately help guide the field in reducingand eliminating tobacco-related disparities in the United States.
