Objectives. We estimated the prevalence of and risk factorsfor intimate partner violence in China.
Methods. Our cross-sectional, comparative prevalence study useda face-to-face survey of randomly selected women attending anurban outpatient gynecological clinic at a major teaching hospitalin Fuzhou, China. Multiple logistic regression models were usedto assess risk factors for intimate partner violence.
Results. Of the 600 women interviewed, the prevalence of lifetimeintimate partner violence and violence taking place within theyear before the interview was 43% and 26%, respectively. Forlifetime intimate partner violence, partners who had extramaritalaffairs and who refused to give respondents money were the strongestindependent predictors. For intimate partner violence takingplace within the year before the interview, frequent quarrelingwas the strongest predictor.
Conclusions. Intimate partner violence is prevalent in China, with strong associations with male patriarchal values and conflictresolutions. Efforts to reduce intimate partner violence shouldbe given high priority in health care settings where women canbe reached.
