Interest in studying the impact of acculturation on immigranthealth has increased in tandem with the growth of the Latinopopulation in the United States. Linear assimilation modelscontinue to dominate public health research despite the availabilityof more complex acculturation theories that propose multidimensionalframeworks, reciprocal interactions between the individual andthe environment, and other acculturative processes among variousLatino groups.
Because linear and unidimensional assessments (e.g., nativity, length of stay in the United States, and language use) provideconstricted measures of acculturation, the rare use of multidimensionalacculturation measures and models has inhibited a more comprehensiveunderstanding of the association between specific componentsof acculturation and particular health outcomes. A public healthperspective that incorporates the roles of structural and culturalforces in acculturation may help identify mechanisms underlyinglinks between acculturation and health among Latinos.
