An accumulating body of empirical data suggests that currentDepartment of Veterans Affairs (VA) psychiatric disability andrehabilitation policies for combat-related posttraumatic stressdisorder (PTSD) are problematic. In combination, recent administrativetrends and data from epidemiological and clinical studies suggesttheses policies are countertherapeutic and hinder research effortsto advance our knowledge regarding PTSD. Current VA disabilitypolicies require fundamental reform to bring them into linewith modern science and medicine, including current empiricallysupported concepts of resilience and psychiatric rehabilitation.
