Addressing the Health Care Needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives

    INTRODUCTION
 
Although the public health community is generally aware that American Indians and Alaska Natives have a higher burden of illness, injury, and premature mortality than non-Hispanic Whites,1 the health care needs of this population are often excluded from policy discussions. This exclusion reflects, at least in part, an absence of data, a misperception that the Indian Health Service (IHS) is an adequate source of care for most American Indians/Alaska Natives, and a failure to recognize pervasive disparities.
