The viewpoint of an expert as renowned as Stonehe received a lifetime achievement award at the international Microbicides 2004 conference for his leadership in the fielddeserves careful consideration. As in his letter here, last spring Stone expressed a sense of urgency about proceeding forthwith to implement planned large-scale trials, irrespective of their impact on testing of new microbicide concepts: "Every day were not doing something, people are getting infected and dying . . . weve just got to get these products out there."1
