Dean Linda Fried of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health believes in serving the public good. In envisioning a future destiny for the schools of public health, she maintains that they are part of the essential infrastructure of a civil society. That is, there is a core societal need for creating a cadre of teachers that will educate future generations of public health scientists, scholars, and practitioners toward improving the health of the public.
