In 2001, we releaseda surgeon general's report entitled "Mental Health: Culture,Race, and Ethnicity." In that report, we noted the disproportionateburden of mental disorders experienced by African Americansand other minorities, due in great part to the burdens of povertyand related difficulty accessing quality health care. We alsodiscussed at length the importance of culture on the nature,magnitude, and response to mental disorders.
