Abstract
Interest in studying the impact of acculturation on health hasincreased in tandem with the growth of the Latino populationin the United States. Linear assimilation models continue todominate public health research despite the availability ofmore complex acculturation theories proposing multidimensionalframeworks, reciprocal interactions between the individual andthe environment, and other acculturative process among variousLatino groups.
The rare use of multidimensional acculturationmodels in conjunction with current measures of acculturation(e.g., nativity, length of stay in the United States, and languageuse) has inhibited a more comprehensive understanding of theassociation between specific components of acculturation withparticular health outcomes. A public health perspective on acculturationthat incorporates the role of structural and cultural forcesmay help to better explain mechanisms underlying acculturationand health among Latinos.
