Abstract
Objectives. We examined the prevalence of depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders among Latinos residing in the UnitedStates.
Methods. We used data from the National Latino and AsianAmerican Study, which included a nationally representative sampleof Latinos. We calculated weighted prevalence rates of lifetimeand past-year psychiatric disorders across different sociodemographic, ethnic, and immigration groups.
Results. Lifetime psychiatricdisorder prevalence estimates were 28.1% for men and 30.2% forwomen. Puerto Ricans had the highest overall prevalence rateamong the Latino ethnic groups assessed. Increased rates ofpsychiatric disorders were observed among US-born, English-proficient,and third-generation Latinos.
Conclusions. Our results provideimportant information about potential correlates of psychiatricproblems among Latinos that can inform clinical practice andguide program development. Stressors associated with culturaltransmutation may exert particular pressure on Latino men. Continuedattention to environmental influences, especially among third-generationLatinos, is an important area for substance abuse program development.
