The authors end their otherwise well written article with the
thoroughly unjustified conclusion that because profit-seeking nursing
homes are, in the aggregate, of lesser quality that "it is unwise to
entrust such vulnerable patients to profit-seeking firms." I dare say
that I would prefer to be in the top rated proprietary facility than the
bottom-rated non-profit. I suggest that the authors evidence a lack of
clear thinking when they infer from aggregate measures of performance
that no for-profit firms can be trusted with the care of vulnerable
patients.
