About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. African American and Latino populations have among the lowest rates in the nation of access to preventive care and treatment services for oral health concerns. Increasing the number of dentists of color who serve poor and working class communities and populations of color is the subject of this month's Editor's Choice by Dennis Mitchell (see p. 1308). The GEAR UP summer camp held at the University of Washington in Seattle is designed to prepare junior high school students for college. The week-long program includes a "Dental Camp" segment during which students focus on their oral health practices and are informed about careers in oral health-related fields. The cover photograph shows Walter Strange, 14, a participant in GEAR UP in 2003, cleaning the teeth of a dental patient simulator after taking an impression of them.

Photograph by Ted S. Warren (Associated Press). Cover concept and selection by Henrie Treadwell, Dennis Mitchell, Aleisha Kropf, and Robert Sember.
