Cover. According to Leslie Beitsch, MD, JD, Department Editor of Government, Politics, and Law, "This issue of the Journal on the `business` of public health has only served to reinforce the vigor of my long-held views." He unabashedly confesses to being a recovering former state and local health official and outlines his developing thoughts on how public health practice might be better incorporated into the Journal. (p. 200) The cover this month was inspired by the Research Article by Schnitzer et al. titled, "Public Health Surveillance of Fatal Child Maltreatment: Analysis of 3 State Programs." They concluded that no single data source was adequate, but combining just 2 sources substantially increased case ascertainment. Public health is serious business and demands our increased vigilance and commitment as professionals and members of civil society.
