About the Journal

Celebrating over 100 years, the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) is dedicated to publication of original work in research, research methods, and program evaluation in the field of public health. The Journal also regularly publishes editorials and commentaries and serves as a forum for health policy analysis. The mission of the Journal is to publish recent evidence that is relevant for public health policy and practice. Each month, national and international public health professionals turn to AJPH for the most current, authoritative, in-depth information in the field.

The goals of both the online and the print versions of the Journal, published monthly by the American Public Health Association, are

  • To publish the best scientific research in the field of public health,
  • To serve as a forum for diverse viewpoints on major public health issues and policies,
  • To promote diverse public health practice models,
  • To increase public and professional understanding of public health problems and their solutions through delivery channels relevant to different audiences and their needs, and
  • To work in concert with the 3 main priorities of the American Public Health Association, namely to develop universal coverage, eliminate health disparities, and rebuild the public health infrastructure.

AJPH, first published in 1911, is the official Journal of and published independently by the American Public Health Association, 800 I St., NW, Washington, DC 20001-3710; (202) 777-APHA(2742). APHA is a professional society founded in 1872 to represent all disciplines and specialties in public health.

Impact and Influence

The AJPH continues to be a highly influential publication. Our impact factor for 2020 is 9.308, up from 6.464 in 2019, which ranks AJPH #6 of 176 titles in the Public, Environmental and Occupational Health category in the Social Sciences Citation Index and #9 of 203 titles for the same category in the Science edition.

Articles published in 2020 garnered approximately 3 citations within the first 12 months of publication, giving AJPH an immediacy index of 3.181. In addition, AJPH articles from across our 110-year history were cited 51,398 times last year, and our H-index remained steady at 264.

The normalized eigenfactor score for the journal is 11.91507. Relative to a score of 1, articles published in 2020 were 12 times more influential than those published in other journals.

Quality Peer Review

Research and Essay papers receive scrutiny by external reviewers and additional assessment by the responsible associate editor, deputy editor, and editor-in-chief. Initial screening results in rejection of the majority of manuscripts within a few days to two weeks of submission. For those papers that are selected for review, the time to first decision is about one month, and overall time from submission to acceptance, which includes revisions by the authors, is about two months.

In 2020, AJPH received 5,309 submissions. Final decisions were made on 5,254 papers in 2020, of which 621 (11.82%) were accepted for publication. The acceptance rate is 5% for research articles and analytic essays.

Unique Online Features

The online Journal is a delivery channel of special importance to those in the research, academic, student, and practice communities. It is the official version of the journal. Among key benefits for users are the cross-journal search capabilities and free hyperlinking from article references to full-text articles in other online journals.

Authors from around the world contribute their original unpublished research, social science analyses, scholarly essays, critical commentaries, and letters to the editor to AJPH. Department submissions include
